The Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG) has developed two new tools that can help stimulate economic development by better understanding regional freight flows.
MAG previewed two new tools with Western Regional Alliance members during a January meeting. These two freight viewers empower people to better understand the nuances of freight movement throughout the Maricopa County region and could be replicated in other regions as well.
Many states are currently building their own freight plans under the framework of the federal “Fixing America’s Surface Transportation” (FAST) Act. One of the freight viewers was developed with this purpose in mind and the other was developed to create a megaregional freight model designed to make data analysis more efficient and accessible.
In both cases, the freight viewers could be expanded to allow for a deeper focus on freight movement in the Intermountain West overall. In turn, this could position stakeholders in the megaregion to identify strategic corridors and more successfully pursue projects and grants together.
